Frequently Asked Questions About Running Pace
Quick answers on running rhythm, speed conversions, and race-day pacing strategies.
What is running pace and how is it calculated?
Pace is the time required to cover 1 kilometer (or 1 mile), measured in Minutes:Seconds/km. Formula: Pace = Total Run Time (mins) ÷ Total Distance (km). For example: If you run 10km in 55 minutes, your average pace is 55 ÷ 10 = 5.5 mins/km (equal to Pace 5:30/km).
What treadmill speed (km/h) corresponds to Pace 5:00 or Pace 6:00?
Pace 4:00 = 15.0 km/h; Pace 4:30 = 13.33 km/h; Pace 5:00 = 12.0 km/h; Pace 5:30 = 10.91 km/h; Pace 6:00 = 10.0 km/h; Pace 6:30 = 9.23 km/h; Pace 7:00 = 8.57 km/h; Pace 8:00 = 7.5 km/h.
How do I safely improve my running pace?
The golden rule is building an aerobic base first (Zone 2 easy runs making up 80% of weekly volume). After 2–3 months of solid base building, introduce 1 Interval session and 1 Tempo run per week to lift your lactate threshold safely without overloading tendons.
What is the difference between outdoor pace and treadmill pace?
Outdoors, your body must propel itself forward against wind resistance. On a treadmill, the belt moves under your feet. To match the metabolic cost of road running, set the treadmill incline to 1.0% – 1.5%.
