1. Overview: When “Max Cushion” Hits the Limit

Ever since its debut, the Puma Magmax line has aimed to dominate the max-cushion segment. With the 2026 Magmax 2, Puma is pushing the user experience to a new level—literally. They aren’t interested in competing in the “standard comfort” space anymore; they want to create an entity completely detached from the ground.

From my perspective—a 165cm, 57kg average runner—the Magmax 2 looks like a giant marshmallow strapped to my feet. The first step-in is overwhelming due to the material luxury, but a pragmatic runner immediately asks: Is a 46mm stack height actually necessary for daily training, or is it just an arms race to grab media attention? At 57kg, I find this shoe more of a “high-tech fashion accessory” than a serious training tool. Puma is betting everything on indulgence, and I’m here to see if that gamble pays off for smaller runners.

2. Technical Specifications (US Men’s Size 8)

Let’s dive into the “monster” specs updated for the Magmax 2:

  • Weight (US Men’s 8): Approximately 260g - 266g. This is a commendable engineering feat. Packing this much foam while staying under 270g is incredible. However, at 57kg, 260g is still noticeable, with a bit of inertia in every stride.
  • Heel Stack Height: 46mm. A staggering figure, well beyond World Athletics competition limits (40mm). You are literally standing on a foam tower.
  • Forefoot Stack Height: 38mm. Even the forefoot is thicker than the heels of most daily trainers.
  • Drop: 8mm. A standard drop to relieve calf strain.
  • Midsole Foam: Nitrofoam Elite. Puma’s top-tier supercritical nitrogen-infused foam, previously reserved for racing models like the Fast-R or Deviate Elite.
  • Upper: Thin, breathable Engineered Mesh with strategic PWRTAPE to secure the foot on the towering midsole.
  • Outsole: PumaGrip. Still the king of traction, whether on wet asphalt or slippery pavements.

3. Upper & Fit Analysis

With a 46mm stack, the upper is critical for safety. Puma smartly used a thin, high-tensile engineered mesh. The fit is snug but not restrictive. For my 165cm frame, the toe box is roomy enough to wiggle my toes without feeling like I’m “swimming.”

the standout feature is the PWRTAPE system. These reinforcement strips run along the upper, providing structure and, more importantly, preventing my foot from sliding laterally during turns. However, due to the massive midsole, the collar—despite being well-padded—felt slightly insecure. The distance from the ankle to the ground is so great that I felt cautious with every step. The thin tongue helps reduce lace pressure—a subtle detail showing Puma’s balance between an aggressive midsole and a sleek upper.

4. Geometry & Rocker

With a 46mm heel and 38mm forefoot, a flat base would be a stability nightmare. Puma had to implement an aggressive rocker.

  • Rocker: The Magmax 2 features a Max Rocker geometry in both the heel and toe. From afar, it looks like a boat.
  • Ride Feeling: With my stride, this geometry works quite well at slow speeds. The shoe creates a natural rolling motion, facilitating transitions from heel to toe without needing much ankle force. However, at this height, ground feel is non-existent. I felt like I was “floating” on a cloud rather than running. The connection between my brain and the pavement is completely severed by 46mm of foam.
  • Ankle Impact: Thanks to the pronounced heel rocker, strain on the Achilles is significantly reduced—perfect for those with tendon issues. On the downside, lateral stability is a major weakness. With such a high center of gravity, a small pebble or a sharp turn feels risky for my ankles. This shoe requires strong ankles to control these “stilts.”

5. Midsole Experience

Using Nitrofoam Elite—a racing foam—at a 46mm depth is a double-edged sword for a lightweight runner.

  • Personal Feel (57kg): It’s too soft and bouncy. At 57kg, my landing force isn’t enough to bottom out this massive slab of Elite foam to get a snappy response. Instead, I just sink into the 46mm cushion. It feels like a high-end mattress: fun at first, but quickly fatiguing due to instability.
  • Energy Return: Nitrofoam Elite is naturally bouncy, but at this thickness, it creates a “sinking” effect for lightweight runners. I feel like I’m working harder to lift my feet out of the “velvet” cushion with every step. Compared to the Magmax 1, the V2 is noticeably softer, but the “snap” and ground connection are gone. This is a midsole for leisure, not efficiency.
  • Foam Durability: Puma’s nitrogen-infused supercritical foam is incredibly durable. After 100km, I see no signs of creasing or flattening—an issue common with standard EVA foams at this thickness.

6. Real-world Performance by Pace

This shoe is polarizing and isn’t for every workout:

Fast Paces (Interval/Tempo): This is the sweet spot for 75kg+ runners. Heavier runners provide enough force to compress the 46mm foam, activating the Nitrofoam Elite’s bounce and stabilizing the shoe. For them, the Magmax 2 is a godsend for joints under heavy load.

8. Comparison with Puma Magmax 1

Puma is clearly positioning the Magmax 2 in a different lane:

  • Magmax 1: More pragmatic, stable, and suitable for most lightweight runners. It keeps the soul of a traditional daily trainer.
  • Magmax 2: Focused entirely on indulgence, protection, and fashion. If you need a serious training shoe for marathon prep, the Magmax 1 is the smarter choice. The Magmax 2 is for those who want a “peak experience” and absolute comfort without worrying about speed.

9. Bonus: Lifestyle & Styling

For those of us at 165cm, this is the ultimate “height hack”:

  • Height Boost: With 46mm of stack, I gain nearly 5cm of height. It’s a massive confidence booster. It takes me from 165cm to near 170cm in an instant.
  • Styling: Puma designed this with a “futuristic” aesthetic. Chunky build paired with crew socks and running shorts creates a modern, dynamic look. A tip for smaller frames: avoid overly baggy pants, as the massive shoes might make you look like you’re wearing someone else’s footwear. Stick to streamlined fits to highlight the “beast” on your feet.

10. Value for Money (P/P)

Let’s be realistic about your wallet in 2026:

  • MSRP (~4,500,000 VND): 6/10. Too expensive for pure running. You’re paying for the massive Elite foam and bold design that doesn’t actually improve your pace.
  • Sale Price (Below 2,800,000 VND): 9/10. If you catch a sale, pull the trigger. It’s the most durable walking and recovery shoe you’ll own. The durability of the foam and the PumaGrip outsole is outstanding—easily hitting 1,000km while keeping its shape.
  • Cost per km: Because of its high durability, the actual cost of the Magmax 2 is very economical if used for its intended purpose (walking and easy recovery runs).

11. Final Verdict: Beautiful, Tall, but Not for Everyone

Puma took a risk with the Magmax 2. It offers unrivaled cushion and a 5cm height hack, but trades off stability and speed versatility. For me—a 57kg runner—this is a luxury toy for walking and recovery rather than a shoe to hunt for PRs.

  • Pros: Unbeatable cushion; natural 5cm height boost; excellent PumaGrip traction; highly durable Nitrofoam Elite.
  • Cons: Lack of lateral stability (easy to roll an ankle); not suitable for speed work; too bouncy and lacks ground feel for those under 60kg.

My Overall Rating: 7.6/10.
