1. Overview: The Rise of Pure PEBA
The New Balance SuperComp Elite line has always been known for being the most forgiving, accessible option in the super shoe category. However, entering the 2026 v5 version, NB has ditched that “friendly” persona for something much more aggressive. They’ve completely abandoned blended foams, moving to a 100% supercritical PEBA midsole.
At 5’5“ (165cm) and 125 lbs (57kg), I find the SC Elite v5 to be a lethal weapon, but one that comes with strings attached. It is no longer the “run-in-anything” shoe the v4 was. New Balance is gunning for heavyweights like the Vaporfly and Adios Pro with a massive 40mm stack. I’m reviewing this with a critical eye regarding its premium price point; at this level, we expect more than just performance—we expect to fly.
2. Specs (US Men’s Size 8)
Here’s how the 2026 specs shake out:
- Weight: ~210g - 215g. A solid improvement for the series, though compared to sub-200g racers, it still feels a bit substantial in hand.
- Heel Stack: 40mm. Pushing the World Athletics limit for maximum cushioning.
- Forefoot Stack: 32mm.
- Drop: 8mm. A classic drop, much friendlier for heel or midfoot strikers than the more aggressive low-drop options.
- Cushioning: Latest generation FuelCell PEBA. Pure, supercritical foam, no fillers.
- Carbon Plate: Energy Arc technology with a hollowed-out midsole channel to maximize compression and rebound.
- Upper: FantomFit, an ultra-thin, seamless engineered mesh.
- Outsole: Thin rubber strategically placed in high-wear zones.
3. Upper & Fit Analysis
The v5 upper is a masterclass in minimalism. The FantomFit tech makes the shoe feel almost invisible on foot. For my frame, the profile is clean and streamlined.
However, minimalism comes at a cost: the lockdown isn’t as plush as before. If you have low-volume feet (like mine), you’ll need to dial in the lacing carefully to avoid heel slip during tight corners. The tongue is thin, gusseted, and breathable, but lacks padding. If you overtighten your laces, you’ll definitely feel some pressure on the bridge of your foot. Nike and Adidas still hold the edge here by maintaining a bit of padding in sensitive areas.
4. Rocker Geometry
With a 40mm stack and 8mm drop, New Balance has nailed a highly supportive geometry.
- Rocker: The boat-like curvature is pronounced. When standing still, the heel and toe don’t fully touch the ground; the midfoot is the anchor.
- Transition: For my stride, the combination of the rocker and the 8mm drop makes the heel-to-toe transition incredibly smooth. It doesn’t force a forefoot strike like lower-drop shoes, which feels far more natural for the average runner.
- Calf Strain: The 8mm drop significantly reduces load on the Achilles and calves compared to lower-drop racers—a huge plus for the latter stages of a marathon.
5. Midsole Experience
The 100% FuelCell PEBA is the game-changer here.
- Personal Feel (57kg): Surprisingly, even at my lighter weight, this foam doesn’t feel sluggish or “dead” like EVA. It’s incredibly soft yet provides an immediate, snappy response. The Energy Arc channel allows the plate to load and release like a true spring. I felt in total control of the 40mm stack rather than feeling like I was walking on stilts.
- Energy Return: Explosive. At high speeds, each stride provides a distinct forward push. It’s not as chaotic or unstable as some versions of the Vaporfly; it’s more controlled and composed for the full 26.2 miles.
- Stability: This remains the Achilles’ heel. With 40mm of soft PEBA, uneven surfaces are a challenge. As a lighter runner, I had to stay sharp to prevent rolling an ankle on the rougher roads here in Vietnam.

6. The Verdict: Top-Tier Speed, But Watch the Price
The New Balance SC Elite v5 is a massive leap forward. It’s an inspiring ride that genuinely makes you want to run faster. Just don’t let the marketing hype blind you to the financial reality.
- Pros: Highly responsive 100% PEBA foam; 8mm drop is very accessible; Energy Arc works great for lighter runners; a legit 4cm height boost.
- Cons: 210g is slightly heavy for a pure racer; the MSRP is steep; lateral stability could be better; only a “must-buy” if found on a deep discount.
My Rating: 7/10 (Would be a 9.6/10 if priced under 3.6 million VND).
