1. Overview: When the crown starts to rust

The New Balance 1080 series has long been positioned as the “king of max-cushion” for daily training. For the past decade, it’s been the default choice for runners seeking reliable, plush comfort. Heading into the 2026 v15 release, in an era where the running world is obsessed with supercritical foams like PEBA or snappy, nitrogen-infused compounds, I expected a massive transformation from the Boston brand. I was looking for something that balanced softness, bounce, and a lightweight build to go head-to-head with top-tier contenders from Nike or Puma.

However, my first impression holding the 1080v15 was one of slight disappointment mixed with skepticism. As a 57kg, 165cm runner, this shoe feels like a luxury SUV running on an engine from a decade ago. It is sleek, impeccably finished, and feels heavenly when you first slide your foot in. But from the very first strides, I realized the brand is sticking to a stubbornly conservative approach. New Balance seems to be betting on customers who prioritize walking, standing all day, and lifestyle wear over actual runners looking to put in the miles for performance. I’m going to dissect this shoe with a critical eye so you can see the value behind that flashy exterior.

2. Technical Specifications (US Men’s Size 8)

Let’s look at the spec sheet for what I call the “new bottle, old wine” approach to see the contradiction in New Balance’s strategy:

  • Weight (US Men’s 8): Roughly 245g - 252g. This is a rare bright spot. Compared to the v14, which weighed nearly 290g, the v15 has shed significant weight. That said, in 2026, 250g for a daily trainer is still far from featherweight.
  • Stack Height: 40mm. An enormous figure, placing the 1080v15 among the highest-stack shoes on the market, promising “bottomless” cushioning.
  • Forefoot Height: 34mm. A moderate drop that provides excellent protection for the forefoot.
  • Drop: 6mm. A neutral drop that makes midfoot striking easier without forcing the heel-strike pressure found in 10-12mm drops.
  • Midsole Tech: Refined Fresh Foam X. Don’t let the name fool you; at its core, it’s still structured EVA.
  • Upper: High-tech Engineered Mesh, great elasticity but quite thick.
  • Outsole: Blown Rubber in a large lug pattern to maximize surface contact and durability.

3. Upper & Fit Analysis

If there is one thing New Balance consistently nails, it’s the comfort of their uppers. Sliding into the 1080v15, the first sensation is pure luxury. The premium mesh wraps the foot gently yet securely. With my 165cm frame and non-wide feet, the internal volume feels like a paradise.

However, the heel and tongue are heavily padded. While this provides absolute plushness, it comes at the cost of poor breathability. During long runs in the Vietnamese heat, my feet started feeling “on fire” after about 40 minutes. While competitors have moved to paper-thin meshes, New Balance sticks to this thick, dense weave. Lockdown is decent, but because of the excessive padding, I sometimes felt my foot “swimming” slightly unless the laces were cinched extremely tight.

4. Rocker Geometry

This is where New Balance uses “geometric design” to compensate for an EVA midsole that has reached its physical limit.

  • Rocker: The shoe features an aggressive forefoot rocker. When standing on a flat surface, the toe clearly lifts off the ground.
  • Ride feel: With my stride, this rocker makes the transition from heel to toe quite natural. It creates a gentle “rolling” effect that reduces effort at slower speeds—a big plus for those who heel-strike.
  • Ankle Impact: Because of this curve, my Achilles and ankles don’t have to work as hard for propulsion. However, a problem arises: because the stack is so tall (40mm) and the foam is so soft, the rocker’s benefit is sometimes neutralized by the instability. I found my ankles having to work harder to maintain balance on that 4cm platform, rather than letting the shoe propel me forward decisively.

5. Midsole Experience

Forty millimeters of Fresh Foam X looks impressive on paper, but for a 57kg runner, the experience is a frustrating trade-off.

  • Underfoot feel: The cushion is incredibly soft. It’s like standing on a custom-molded high-end foam pad. Every walk or easy run makes joint pressure feel nonexistent. But this is “static” softness—it feels great when you’re standing still or moving very slowly.
  • Energy Return: This is the critical weakness. When I strike the pavement hoping for a rebound to propel me forward, the EVA foam simply absorbs the impact. It gives very little back. I felt my foot sinking into the foam, requiring extra muscular effort to lift off for the next step.
  • Dead feel: Compared to the supercritical (PEBA) foams of 2026, Fresh Foam X feels quite dead. I couldn’t find any of that explosive “pop” needed to maintain cadence. To me, this midsole is purely for impact protection, not for performance running.

6. Performance at Various Paces

I put the 1080v15 through everything from intervals to recovery runs to find its true identity:

Final Verdict:

  • MSRP: Roughly 4,500,000đ - 4,900,000 VNĐ (~$165 USD).
  • Hardcore running: 4/10 stars.
  • Walking & Lifestyle: 9/10 stars.
  • Overall: 7/10 stars.
