1. Overview: Mizuno Stops Being Conservative

For decades, Mizuno remained loyal to mechanical structures and traditional foams. But with the arrival of the Neo Zen 2, the brand has unveiled a new weapon: Mizuno Enerzy NXT technology. This is an EVA foam treated with a supercritical nitrogen-injection process, creating microscopic air bubbles within the material. The result is a massive 40mm stack height that weighs a surprisingly light 240g - 245g.

At 5’5“ (165cm) and 125 lbs (57kg), the Neo Zen 2 provides an experience that is both familiar and new. It’s familiar in that it retains Mizuno’s signature stability, but new in that the cushioning has been elevated to a different level thanks to nitrogen technology. While the shoe has dialed back the chaotic “bounciness” of its predecessor to favor smoothness, Enerzy NXT still delivers a respectable internal punch. However, with a retail price of 3,800,000 VND, it’s a significant investment that warrants a closer look in this detailed review.

2. Technical Specs (Men’s Size 8 US)

  • Weight (Men’s Size 8 US): 240g - 245g. An impressive weight-to-volume ratio thanks to nitrogen-infused foam.
  • Heel Stack Height: 40mm. Pushes the limit of competitive standards, offering maximum protection.
  • Forefoot Stack Height: 34mm.
  • Drop: 6mm. Encourages a natural stride and midfoot strike.
  • Cushioning: Mizuno Enerzy NXT (Nitrogen-infused EVA). The brand’s top-tier foam.
  • Upper: Next-gen multi-layer engineered mesh, designed for a dialed-in fit and low weight.
  • Outsole: Highly durable X10 rubber, grooved for enhanced flexibility.

3. Deep Dive: The Magic of Nitrogen Foam

This is the soul of the Neo Zen 2 upgrade.

  • Material Nature: Mizuno Enerzy NXT isn’t standard EVA. The supercritical nitrogen-injection process makes the foam structure more uniform with millions of microscopic air pockets, achieving a lightness traditional EVA can’t touch.
  • Compression Feel: At 125 lbs, I felt the difference immediately. Upon landing, the 40mm block doesn’t collapse loosely. Instead, it offers “active compression.” The heel sinks just enough to dissipate impact before the denser foam underneath provides immediate support.
  • Energy Return: While fans of V1 might miss the “poppy” bounce, Enerzy NXT provides a more refined response. It isn’t springy in a frantic way; it provides consistent energy return, helping you maintain a steady cadence without wasting muscle power to control the shoe.
  • Temperature & Durability: Nitrogen-infused foam is largely immune to temperature fluctuations. Whether running in Vietnam’s sweltering heat or a climate-controlled gym, the cushioning remains consistent. Enerzy NXT also shows better compression set resistance, helping the shoe retain its shape and feel over hundreds of kilometers.

4. Upper & Fit: Precision in Every Stitch

Mizuno has overhauled the upper to match the premium midsole.

  • Lockdown: On my 5’5“ frame, the new upper feels very secure. The lacing system and tongue were redesigned to distribute pressure evenly over the midfoot. The collar is padded just enough to lock my heel down during tempo efforts without causing irritation.
  • Comfort: The engineered mesh has built-in stretch in key areas like the toe joints—essential for long runs when your feet tend to swell.
  • Breathability: Ventilation holes on the Neo Zen 2 are wider in the toe box. The lightweight construction makes heat dissipation efficient, preventing that “hot foot” sensation after 10km.

5. Geometry & 6mm Drop: A Posture Revolution

Moving to a 6mm drop on a 40mm stack is a bold move.

  • Movement: For my stride, the 6mm drop makes it much easier to land midfoot. The shoe doesn’t “catch” the heel like traditional Mizuno models with 10-12mm drops. The transition from heel to toe is fluid, aided by the flat, stable platform.
  • Stability: Despite the 40mm height, the ground contact area is wide. The density of the Enerzy NXT foam ensures I never feel unstable, even around tight corners or on uneven surfaces.

6. Performance by Pace

  • Easy & Recovery Pace (6:30 - 8:00/km): 10/10. Outstanding. 40mm of nitrogen foam is the best recovery tool in Mizuno’s current lineup. You feel like you’re being cradled.
  • Daily Mileage (5:45 - 6:15/km): 10/10. This is where the Neo Zen 2 shines. The light weight (240g) combined with deep cushion makes logging daily miles effortless. My legs feel fresh even after a 40-50km week.
  • Speed Work (Tempo/Intervals): 5/10. Enerzy NXT is punchier than standard EVA, but it lacks the explosive turnover for sub-5:00 pace. This shoe favors safety and durability over raw speed.
  • Walking: 10/10. Unrivaled for high-end walking. The 40mm cushioning turns every step into a treat.

7. Weight & Suitability

  • For runners under 130 lbs (like me - 125 lbs): The 240g-245g weight is a gift. It eliminates the “heavy shoe” barrier often found in max-cushion trainers.
  • For runners over 165 lbs: You will feel the true superiority of the nitrogen infusion. The foam is resistant enough that heavier runners won’t “bottom out,” a common issue in other high-stack shoes.

8. Bonus: Fashion & Everyday Wear

  • Height Hack: The 40mm heel gives you exactly 4cm of extra height. It looks sleek and athletic with joggers or casual attire.
  • Styling: The Neo Zen 2 features a minimalist, premium design. It looks clean and pairs easily with running shorts, joggers, or even straight-leg jeans for daily wear.

9. Value for Money (P/P): Hunting for Deals

Be strategic with this purchase:

  • Retail Price: 3,800,000 VND. Quite steep for a daily trainer, even with nitrogen tech.
  • Target Sale Price: Under 2,200,000 VND. At this price point, the Neo Zen 2 is unbeatable for cushioning and durability (10/10).
  • Budget Advice: If you crave the “bouncing” sensation and want to save cash, look for the previous version (V1). If you prioritize joint protection and the smoothness of nitrogen tech, V2 is the winner.

10. Conclusion: Mizuno’s High-Tech Cloud

Mizuno Neo Zen 2 proves that Mizuno can create cutting-edge shoes while maintaining their heritage of durability. The combination of 40mm of stack and Enerzy NXT foam creates an exceptional daily trainer.

  • Pros: Extremely plush and light 40mm Enerzy NXT cushioning; ideal 240g weight; 6mm drop for a natural stride; breathable upper; 4cm height boost; excellent durability.
  • Cons: High retail price; loss of the V1’s “bouncy” feel; only truly worth it at a discount.

My Overall Rating: 9/10. (The most comfortable, stable, and lightweight daily trainer if you can snag it under 2.2M VND.)
