1. Overview and Context

The ASICS Magic Speed 4 is a real shock to those who loved the slim, nimble feel of its predecessors. ASICS has transformed what was once a lean speed trainer into a max-stack “monster” with record-breaking dimensions. While this is clearly an attempt to offer maximum protection for long runs, it raises serious questions about versatility.

As a 165cm runner weighing 57kg, managing a shoe with a stack height of nearly 4.4cm isn’t simple. When placed alongside competitors from China that are both cheaper and lighter, the Magic Speed 4 has a lot to prove—it needs to demonstrate that this massive stack height provides a real advantage rather than just being a heavy block of foam underfoot.

2. Technical Specifications (100% Accurate)

  • Stack Height: 43.5mm (Exceeding the 40mm limit for international competition, making this an “unrestricted” Super Trainer).
  • Forefoot Height: 35.5mm.
  • Heel-to-Toe Drop: 8mm.
  • Weight (Men’s US 8): Approx. 235g (232g–238g range). A significant weight increase compared to the 210-220g targets of previous Magic Speed iterations.
  • Midsole Tech: Dual-density setup with FF BLAST™ TURBO on top and FF BLAST™ PLUS on the bottom.
  • Propulsion: A full-length carbon plate sandwiched between the foams.
  • Upper: Motion Wrap 2.0 mesh.
  • Outsole: ASICSGRIP™.

3. Midsole Tech and Ride: Overwhelmed by Cushioning

With a heel stack of 43.5mm, your first impression sliding into the Magic Speed 4 is pure immersion. For a lighter runner (57kg), this cushioning feels like a luxury spring mattress. You lose almost all ground feel.

The combo of Turbo foam and the carbon plate provides a “deep” bounce. However, if we’re being honest, the 235g weight is a hurdle. During the first few kilometers, the bounce helps you glide. But by the 15km mark, my 57kg frame started feeling the weight of that massive midsole. It lacks the snappy, weightless feeling of sub-210g competitors (like the Xtep 160X). It offers absolute comfort but lacks agility.

4. Upper Fit and Design

The Motion Wrap 2.0 upper remains an ASICS highlight.

  • Lockdown: Despite the massive stack, the heel cup is deep and secure, preventing heel slippage. This is critical; with 43.5mm underfoot, any lack of security would feel dangerous.
  • Breathability: Excellent, but because the base is so wide and tall, the shoe looks quite bulky on a 165cm frame. It lacks aesthetic elegance.

5. Performance by Pace

Fast Pace (4:30 - 5:00/min/km): The shoe excels at maintaining a steady pace. Once you’re rolling, the carbon plate and the bounce of the Turbo foam help propel you forward. However, it reacts slowly to sudden tempo changes (Intervals) due to its bulk.

Easy Pace (>6:30/min/km): Surprisingly, for a 43.5mm shoe, it handles slow paces better than most carbon-plated models. It’s so cushioned that you could comfortably use it for recovery runs—something previous Magic Speed models couldn’t claim.

Long Distances (>21km): This is the Magic Speed 4’s sweet spot. The protection is absolute. After a long run, my calves and knees felt much fresher compared to running in lower-profile trainers.

6. Stability Assessment

A major concern for beginners. With a 43.5mm heel, your center of gravity is very high. Even though ASICS widened the base, at 165cm, the feeling of instability is real. You have to be extremely careful on uneven roads or sharp turns. If your ankles aren’t strong, this shoe could be a liability.

7. Walking Performance

Despite the comfort, I don’t recommend it for long walks. The geometry and carbon plate force a forward-leaning gait, which can cause significant anterior tibialis fatigue after a while.

8. Best Use Cases

  • Easy Run: 8/10 (Thanks to the massive comfort).
  • Tempo Run: 8/10 (Stable, but slightly heavy).
  • Interval: 6/10 (Too bulky for rapid speed work).
  • Long Run: 10/10 (Maximum leg protection).

9. Landing Preference

  • Heel Striker: 10/10 (43.5mm of foam is paradise for heel strikers).
  • Midfoot/Forefoot: 8/10 (Good bounce, but zero ground feel).

10. Heavy vs. Light Runners

  • Lightweight (57kg): The shoe feels a bit oversized. You might feel like you’re “swimming” in a giant cushion, though the joint protection is a huge plus.
  • Heavyweight (>80kg): This is the ideal target audience. Their weight will compress the foam more effectively to fully utilize the bounce.

11. Style and Aesthetics

With a 43.5mm stack, this is currently one of the best “height-hacking” shoes on the market. You’ll gain a noticeable boost. However, because the midsole is so wide, it can make your legs look shorter unless paired with very short (3-inch) running shorts.

12. Price and Value

  • Retail Price: Around 4,300,000 VND. This is VERY EXPENSIVE for a daily trainer. At this price, you can buy top-tier Chinese super shoes (like the Li-Ning Feidian 3 Ultra or Xtep 160X 5.0) that are significantly lighter and faster. At full retail, you’re paying for the ASICS brand and “safety” rather than pure performance.
  • Sales/Third-Party: If you can find these on sale for under 2,500,000 VND, my verdict changes completely. At 2.5 million, the Magic Speed 4 becomes an elite Daily Trainer with unmatched comfort and ASICSGRIP durability. At that price, you can ignore the weight issues entirely.

13. Conclusion

The ASICS Magic Speed 4 is a max-cushion shoe in speed-trainer clothing. It’s not as fast as its predecessors, but it is more cushioned and protective than ever.

  • Pros: Ultra-cushioned 43.5mm stack; fantastic leg protection; highly durable ASICSGRIP outsole; great for extra height.
  • Cons: Heavy (235g); unstable due to high stack; expensive MSRP; lacks agility.

Overall Rating: 9 / 10 (If purchased on sale < 2.5m VND).
