1. Overview: A True Successor or Standing Still?
The Supernova Rise line was initially positioned by adidas to replace the Boston series as the brand’s go-to lightweight, cushioned daily trainer. Entering its second generation, the adidas Supernova Rise 2 carries the burden of winning back everyday runners after a lukewarm debut.
At 165cm (5’5“) and 57kg (125 lbs), I look for versatility and a smooth ride in a daily trainer. The Supernova Rise 2 arrived looking polished and distinctly adidas, but its performance feels decidedly “average.” It’s not a bad shoe, but there’s nothing about it that screams “must-have.” In this 1,400-word review, I’ll break down why this shoe is only worth it if you find it at a 50% discount (under 2 million VND), and why, for a 57kg runner, it remains a choice that is “safe to the point of being boring.”
2. Technical Specifications (Men’s US 8)
Let’s take a look at the spec sheet for this “would-be” people’s champion:
- Weight (US 8): Approx. 265g - 275g. Not exactly light for a 2026 daily trainer. For a 57kg runner, that heft starts to become noticeable after the 10km mark.
- Stack Height: 35mm. A standard stack height providing decent cushioning for short to mid-distance runs.
- Forefoot: 25mm.
- Heel-to-Toe Drop: 10mm. A traditional high drop; it’s great for heel strikers but can feel restrictive if you’re trying to work on a midfoot strike.
- Midsole Tech: Dreamstrike+ (a tuned PEBA blend). adidas markets this as super soft, but in practice, it leans toward durability and firmness rather than explosive energy return.
- Upper: Multi-layer Engineered Mesh, snug and quite durable.
- Outsole: Adiwear rubber. Durable with solid grip on dry pavement.
3. Upper & Fit: German Engineering Consistency
The upper of the Supernova Rise 2 feels very “adidas”: rigid, polished, but lacking flair.
- Lockdown: For my 165cm frame, the tongue and lacing system work perfectly. The heel collar is generously padded, locking my 57kg foot down securely. You won’t deal with heel slippage, but you won’t get that nimble, lightweight feeling of a racer either.
- Breathability: Average. The multi-layered mesh protects the foot well but traps heat. If you’re running in the heat of Vietnam for over 60 minutes, your feet will start to feel stuffy.
- Fit: The signature sleek profile remains. However, the toe box is a bit narrow; runners with wider feet may feel some cramping in the toes.
4. Geometry & Stability: Do the Support Rods Work?
adidas included Support Rods in the midsole to boost stability and guide transitions.
- Ride Quality: With a 10mm drop and a 35mm stack, the shoe lacks a pronounced rocker. You won’t feel like you’re being “propelled” forward. The ride is entirely dependent on your own effort. The Support Rods prevent the shoe from twisting, which provides confidence on uneven surfaces.
- Stability: Excellent. This is one of the few strong points of the Rise 2. The lower center of gravity and structured build make the shoe very planted. For a lighter runner, this stability helps maintain form when fatigue sets in.
5. Midsole Experience: Dreamstrike+ or “Dream-Bust”?
The Dreamstrike+ midsole in the Supernova Rise 2 offers a “lukewarm” experience.
- Personal Feel (57kg): Honestly, at my weight, I find this foam a bit FIRM. It lacks the plush, deep compression of a Novablast or the snappy response of the Lightstrike Pro found in the Adizero line. It’s a compromise: it feels stable upon landing and responds in a calm, measured way. After a 10km run, my feet didn’t hurt, but I didn’t feel excited either.
- Protection: 35mm is enough for daily training. However, the nature of Dreamstrike+ is that it feels firmer the longer you run. This is a major drawback if you plan on using these for long runs over 15km.
6. Performance by Pace
The shoe’s “average” ceiling is clear when you change gears:
- Easy Pace (6:30 - 8:00/km): 8/10. This is where the shoe belongs. Relaxed, stable, and durable. The 270g weight isn’t much of an issue at this pace.
- Moderate Pace (5:30 - 6:00/km): 6/10. You start to feel the weight. You have to put in more muscular effort to pull the shoe along. Dreamstrike+ doesn’t offer much help in maintaining this tempo.
- Tempo Pace: Not recommended.
My Final Verdict:
- Full Price: 5/10 stars.
- At 50% Sale: 7.6/10 stars.
