1. Overview: A Challenger in the Mid-Range Segment

In the world of carbon-plated shoes, the arms race for materials never cools down. While Western giants dominate with luxury price tags, 361° has carved out a smart niche with the Flame series. The 5th generation—361° Flame 5—isn’t here to topple the top-tier super shoes; it’s here to make carbon technology accessible to the average runner through a durable, stable, and budget-friendly design.

As a runner with a compact frame (165cm, 57kg), shoes with overly soft midsoles often force my ankles to work overtime to maintain balance. The 361° Flame 5 felt different from the first step. It’s positioned as a highly stable, firm, and planted carbon shoe. My 57kg frame didn’t feel wobbly; instead, I felt fully supported and ready to push through high-intensity workouts.

2. Technical Specifications (Practical Carbon Racer Configuration)

Here are the specs for the 361° Flame 5, based on a US Men’s Size 8:

  • Weight (US Men’s 8): 220g. A great weight that feels substantial enough to optimize momentum for my 57kg frame.
  • Stack Height: 39mm. Near-legal limit height, offering plenty of cushioning to absorb road impact.
  • Drop: 6mm. The sweet spot for a natural foot strike, supporting smooth transitions from midfoot to toe-off.
  • Midsole Tech: 100% nylon-based super foam (ctqflame).
  • Propulsion: Full-length carbon plate with a spoon-shaped geometry for a powerful mechanical lever effect.
  • Upper: Ultra-thin Mono Mesh for weight reduction and breathability.
  • Outsole: High-compression RPU rubber with strategic anti-slip patterns.

3. Midsole Analysis: Stability via Nylon-Based Super Foam

The midsole experience of the 361° Flame 5 reflects a practical mechanical philosophy:

  • Nylon-based super foam (ctqflame) characteristics: This foam is incredibly durable. Its standout feature is stability—there is no wobbling or instability when landing at high speeds. For a lighter runner like me, this midsole feels rock-solid and perfectly controlled.
  • Real-world feel - Firmer than other super shoes: To be blunt, the nylon foam on the Flame 5 feels firmer than other super shoes (like the Adidas Adios Pro 4). While the Adios Pro 4 offers a deep, plush, bouncy sensation, the Flame 5 is firmer, more direct, and provides a raw energy return. It doesn’t coddle your feet; it demands a decisive foot strike to unlock the foam’s full potential.
  • Protection: Despite the initial firmness, the 39mm stack height does a great job of isolating the foot from harsh concrete. After long mileage, my knees and quads felt fresh, proving the midsole’s excellent impact absorption.

4. Upper & Fit: Minimalist Aerodynamics

  • Lockdown: The upper is made of ultra-thin, semi-transparent Mono Mesh. It features a race-fit that hugs the midfoot perfectly. With my 57kg frame, the lacing system and internal reinforcements locked my foot down without any slippage during high-intensity efforts.
  • Comfort: To keep the weight at 220g, the collar and tongue are paper-thin. 361° includes minimal padding at the heel to secure the Achilles. The fit is well-suited for Asian foot shapes, with a toe box that is roomy enough without being restrictive.
  • Breathability: 10/10. The Mono Mesh allows air to flow directly through with every stride, keeping feet dry and cool, effectively eliminating the risk of blisters in hot weather.

5. Outsole & Durability: A Road-Ready Workhorse

  • Traction: The outsole features high-quality rubber with intelligent geometric grooves. Grip on dry asphalt and park paths is excellent. Even during sharp turns at speed, the shoe held firm without sliding.
  • Longevity: This is where the Flame 5 beats its competitors. Thanks to the dense nylon foam and thick rubber outsole, the durability is top-tier for a carbon shoe. It doesn’t bottom out or tear easily. At my weight, I expect these to last between 800km and 1,000km—an impressive figure for a carbon-plated shoe.

6. Performance: A Versatile “Utility Player”

  • Tempo & Speed Workouts: 10/10. This is the Flame 5’s playground. When you push the pace, the firmness of the nylon foam combined with the carbon plate makes my 165cm frame feel light and efficient, helping me maintain cadence without overworking my calves.
  • Race Day: 8/10. For recreational runners aiming to finish safely while maintaining form, this is a solid choice. The high stability keeps you steady through Half or Full Marathons without the risk of muscle fatigue or ankle rolls in the final stages.
  • Walking: 6/10. It’s more stable than most super shoes, so it’s acceptable for light walking, but the firm foam and carbon plate can feel a bit stiff for all-day wear.

7. Weight & Suitability

  • For runners under 60kg (like me - 57kg): The 220g weight feels substantial and responsive. It never felt heavy or sluggish at the end of long runs.
  • For runners over 60kg: The 39mm stack height with dense nylon foam handles heavier loads exceptionally well. Heavier runners will appreciate that the firmer foam won’t bottom out, ensuring maximum joint protection.

8. Bonus: Fashion & Everyday Wear

  • Height Hack: With a 39mm stack height, I gain nearly 4cm in height! Perfect for those of us who want a little extra stature at the finish line.
  • Aesthetics: The Flame 5 features an aggressive, aerodynamic design. It looks best with running shorts or singlets. It doesn’t pair well with jeans or work attire due to its specialized, athletic look.

9. Value for Money: Practicality at a Reasonable Price

  • A solid option: At its current price point, it’s a great deal. You get a full-length carbon plate, high-end nylon foam, and superior durability.
  • Objective P/P (Price-to-Performance) analysis: While it’s a great shoe, the P/P is average compared to top-tier super shoes. It lacks the wild, bouncy, feather-light feel of the elite racers. It wins on stability and durability, not raw speed-record performance.

10. Conclusion: A Practical Choice for the Consistent Runner

361° Flame 5 is a durable carbon warrior, built for daily speed training and safe, stable racing.

  • Pros: Excellent stability, 220g weight, 39mm protection, versatile for Tempo/Speed/Race, high durability, 4cm height boost.
  • Cons: Firmer than elite super shoes (like the Adios Pro 4), average P/P ratio, not ideal for casual walking.

Overall Rating: 9/10 (for versatility and stability in the mid-range carbon segment). If you have a moderate budget and prioritize ankle safety and durability, the 361° Flame 5 is a no-brainer.
