The running shoe market has seen a massive surge from Chinese brands over the past few years. They’ve moved well beyond basic manufacturing, mastering supercritical foam technology to deliver ultra-lightweight, high-performance shoes at accessible price points.
BMAI has long earned the trust of local runners for its pragmatic, durable, and approachable designs. The Jingtan series is the clearest proof of this ambition. With the fourth generation—the BMAI Jingtan 4.0 SL (Super Light)—the brand has shifted gears. This isn’t your plush, daily-driver super trainer; it is a dedicated speed trainer engineered for high-tempo work.
Holding the BMAI Jingtan 4.0 SL for the first time, the lightness is striking. As a runner (165cm, 57kg) clocking 40-50km a week, I’m picky about my speed work shoes. Can the Jingtan 4.0 SL, with its aggressive foam and propulsion plate, actually perform, or will it falter across different paces? Here is my in-depth analysis.
1. Technical Specs
- Weight: 195g (US Men’s 8). This is incredibly impressive, placing it among the lightest speed trainers on the market.
- Stack Height: 35.5mm (heel) / 31mm (forefoot).
- Drop: 4.5mm. A low drop that rewards ankle flexibility and calf strength, optimized for midfoot or forefoot strikers.
- Midsole: BoomMAX+ supercritical foam for elite responsiveness and high energy return.
- Plate: TwistCore full-length TPU support running the length of the midsole for structural stability and maximum snap during acceleration.
- Outsole: DSP/CPU anti-slip rubber in high-wear areas for grip and weight reduction.
- Upper: Single-layer ultra-thin Mono-mesh with a 3D-knit structure for airflow.
- Reference Price: Approx. 2,000,000 VND - 2,500,000 VND.

2. Road Feel
Out of the box, the finish is excellent—clean glue lines and no excess material. The Mono-mesh upper is so thin it’s translucent.
On foot, the 195g weight makes the shoe feel like it disappears. Testing it on the floor, the BoomMAX+ foam provides a clear, snappy rebound—not a mushy, cloud-like sink. However, the true test was on the road. During the first 2km at an easy pace (6:30 min/km), the shoe felt stiff. The 4.5mm drop and rigid TwistCore TPU plate were constantly pushing me forward, which felt unnatural at slow speeds. For a 57kg runner, there wasn’t enough impact to fully compress the BoomMAX+ foam, leading to some foot fatigue.
But when I hit 4:45 - 5:00 min/km, the Jingtan 4.0 SL came alive. The stiffness vanished, replaced by an effortless, soaring sensation. The plate and foam worked in perfect harmony to propel me forward with every stride, making transitions from midfoot to toe-off remarkably fast.
3. Fit
- Sizing: True to Size (TTS). Stick with your standard running shoe size.
- Toe Box: Designed for speed, it’s snug but allows enough room for your toes to splay during high-velocity bursts.
- Tongue & Heel: A thin, racing-style tongue stays locked in place. The heel cup is lightly padded and holds the foot securely—zero slippage, even at high speeds.
- Foot Shape: Best suited for narrow to medium-width feet. If you have a wide foot (2E+), consider a half-size up to avoid midfoot pressure.

4. Cushion
BoomMAX+ is the soul of this shoe. It’s tuned for responsiveness rather than maximum impact protection.
- Firmness: Don’t expect a deep, sinking sensation. The 35.5mm heel stack provides enough protection, but the high-density foam keeps you ready for the next step.
- Energy Return: At high speeds, the energy return is elite. For my 57kg frame, the compression is perfect for Tempo runs, saving my legs from unnecessary fatigue.
5. Stability
To have a sub-200g shoe with a 35mm stack usually requires a sacrifice in stability, but BMAI manages it well:
- TwistCore TPU Plate: Acts as a rigid chassis, preventing midsole twisting on uneven surfaces.
- Footprint: The outsole flare at the heel and forefoot provides a wide base, reducing ankle wobbling.
- 4.5mm Drop: Keeps your center of gravity low, offering better ground feel than higher-drop shoes (8-10mm) during fast efforts.
6. Ride & Distances
The ride is punchy, snappy, and stimulating.
- Pace Suitability:
- Easy Pace (6:00+): Not recommended. The shoe feels awkward and tiring.
- Marathon Pace (5:00 - 5:30): Smooth and efficient.
- Tempo/Intervals (4:00 - 4:45): Its sweet spot. This is where the 195g weight truly shines.
- Distance:
- 5k - 10k: Perfect for PR attempts.
- 21k: Excellent if you have the calf strength to handle the low drop.
- 42k: Doable for experienced runners with good form. Beginners might feel some calf fatigue in the final kilometers.
7. Upper & Outsole
- Upper: Excellent breathability. The Mono-mesh is a savior in hot, humid climates, preventing sweat build-up and blisters.
- Outsole: Great grip on dry asphalt. It handles wet surfaces surprisingly well, too. Durability is solid; expect 600–800km of high-intensity running.
8. Walking & Style
It’s a speed trainer, so it’s not designed for all-day walking. The rigid plate and low drop can tire your calves during long strolls. However, the 35mm stack gives you a nice height boost, and the minimalist aesthetic looks sharp with jeans or joggers.
9. Who is it for?
- Under 60kg: Perfect for fast pace work; skip it for recovery runs.
- 60kg - 75kg: Ideal for Tempo and Interval sessions (5k-21k).
- Over 75kg: Great for short speed work; might feel a bit too compressed on long-distance efforts.
10. Value
At 2,000,000 - 2,500,000 VND, this isn’t a “cheap” shoe, but it is a steal given the technology. You’re getting supercritical foam and a full-length TPU plate—features usually reserved for 3-4 million VND racing shoes from global giants. The cost-to-performance ratio is exceptional.
11. Final Verdict
The BMAI Jingtan 4.0 SL is a bold evolution. It has ditched the “do-it-all” label to become a dedicated speed weapon. It’s light, snappy, and aggressive.
